Tampere Academic Symphony Orchestra TASO is the first and largest student symphony orchestra in Tampere region. Most of the players are students from the local universities (University of Tampere and Tampere University of Technology) and colleges, but there are graduates playing in the orchestra as well.
Albeit being an amateur orchestra, the level of playing is high. The orchestra has performed various major works during its history with great success. The aim of the orchestra is to play challenging music while still having fun doing it. The orchestra tends to have concerts every spring and autumn, so at least two concerts a year.
The orchestra was founded in 1998 as a string orchestra, after which it grew to be a full symphony orchestra in the year 2003. Kimmo Tullila has been the conductor of the orchestra since the year 2000.
